Women of the South

Monument to the Women of the Confederacy in Confederate Park
Jacksonville, Florida
No words will ever be written that can describe the despair and grief which the
women of the South had to endure for four long torturous years. Many of
the people of the South were small prosperous farmers in better times, but now
stripped of the main provider and producer, the farms languished and
depreciated. With loving hands these women of the South cared for the children,
produced what crops were still possible, and tenderly nursed the wounds when
called upon to do so. They accepted their duties bravely and cheerfully. They
sought to do the best they could under the trying circumstances.
